Shifting Patterns of Antisemitism in Latin America: Xenophobia, Exclusion, and Inclusion

Abstract This article analyzes several patterns of antisemitism in twentieth-century Latin America. It identifies historical moments when carriers social and political ideas projected negative images Jews, sometimes pushing anti-Jewish policies at times leading violent actions against Jews. Thus, served to mobilize defense national identity; as a reaction Jewish peddlers perceived threat economies; basis for the generalized rejection “undesirable refugees” during World War II Holocaust; Cold phenomenon, along with anticommunism neo-Nazism. Like other forms xenophobia, was grounded prejudice demonization supposed enemy rather than being based on verified evidence. Analysis suggests that has been deeply rooted America manifested over time changing constellations. At same time, while Judeophobic prejudices have intimidating precluded legal immigration rarely become dominant or led systemic discrimination, massive expulsion, mass genocide, unlike Europe.
